OPEN MEETING

Highlights: Presentation on Mayholme Foundation’s newest book, “They Called Her Canada: The War Diaries of Nursing Sister Bessie Beyer”, by Elizabeth Hirst. The book details the experiences of this front line nurse from St. Catharines during WWI.

Elizabeth holds a Master’s Degree in English Language and Literature from Brock University. She has devoted her life and written works to enhancing awareness of the culture, places and people of Southern Ontario through both her fiction publishing company, Pop Seagull Publishing, and her historical work with the Mayholme Foundation in St. Catharines, a non-profit agency that supports local genealogical and historical research. The “War Diaries” explores the heroic work performed by Canadian nurses in the First World War.

Elizabeth is an independent writer and publisher. She is fascinated by history, architecture, and the role of geography and memory in the way that people construct their reality. She currently lives in Hamilton, Ontario with her husband, Robin McLean, who is a freelance illustrator and frequent collaborator in her literary projects.
