Since my election as your President at the Spring Fling dinner in May, I have been thinking about what my vision for this year might be. “Telling Our Story” has been the emphasis for the past year, and I certainly want to continue that. I have been surprised that many people I have talked to over the years, including faculty and staff at Brock University, high school guidance counsellors, newspaper reporters and friends and neighbours, have never heard of CFUW, despite our having organized an annual House Tour for 44 years, given out scholarships to high school girls since 1985, and awarded scholarships to Brock and Niagara College students for about 30 years, to mention only a few of our community contributions. It seems we have been too modest about our activities, and I am hoping you will help spread the word and bring your friends to our meetings.
CFUW has really “broadened my horizons” this year by allowing me to represent you at the UN Commission on the Status of Women in March, the Ontario Annual General Meeting in May, and the electronic National Annual General Meeting in June. There is more about the AGMs later in this newsletter. I would encourage you to take advantage of the many learning opportunities your club membership affords you by, for example, participating on standing committees and representing the St. Catharines club at interesting CFUW Ontario meetings and seminars in Toronto. You are, of course, welcome to attend any of the Club Executive meetings which will be held at 7:30 PM in the board room of the Niagara Centre for Independent Living, 122 Queenston St. in St. Catharines, on October 30th, January 29th, and April 30th. Feel free to contact me at email@example.com if you have any questions or suggestions. Also, do check out our user friendly website for information about our activities, history, Interest Groups and photos of us working together and having fun. A beautiful Program Brochure will be available at the general meetings which are the second Tuesday of each month, at 7:30 PM from September to May in the St. John’s Activity Centre, 91 Lakeshore Road in St. Catharines. The brochure shows the dates and the list of wonderful speakers for our general meetings. It also describes our many Interest Groups. It would be a good handout to your friends. Sign-up tables for the Interest Groups will be set up at the first meeting for you to register or re-sign in person. I am looking forward to seeing you on September 11th.
